Magruder, Carolyn

MAGRUDER, Carolyn Sterry

Of Atlanta, passed away on October 18, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was born on September 28, 1927, in Nashville, Tennessee. The beloved daughter of Edgar and Carrie Sterry, Carolyn attended Ward-Belmont College. She married Samuel W. Magruder in August 1949, and the two had a loving and devoted 65-year marriage. They moved to Atlanta in 1952. Through Sam's long and distinguished career with The Coca Cola Company, the couple made many close life-long friendships and travelled the world.

Carolyn was strong willed and never hesitated to speak her mind when she thought it was important. She loved sharing her many interests from plant life to folklore with her grandchildren. Carolyn had a life-long love and encyclopedic knowledge of antiques, especially coin silver. During the 1980s, Carolyn co-owned the antique shop Carolyn's Corner. After buying a home in Cashiers, North Carolina, she became interested in mountain folk artists, especially potters, and was proud of her collection of face jugs. Carolyn also enjoyed diving into genealogy and family history. She spent countless hours researching and travelling to libraries and cemeteries to track down the lineage of the Sterry family tree with her sister Anne Henges.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, Carolyn was a founding member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Atlanta before finding her second church home with The Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers. There, she served as the Junior Warden and chaired the annual Bazaar. She was a member of the Order of the Daughters of the King. She lived out her faith by taking care of those around her.

More recently, Carolyn developed many strong friendships at her retirement community, particularly Maurice Long. She always kept an eye out for solo diners to join her table of friends. She was devoted to the "Breakfast Club" of early risers.

Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Sam in 2015. She leaves behind her children, Sam Magruder, Jr. (Carolyn) of Alpharetta, Anne Magruder Farnsworth (Richard) of Atlanta, and Ed Magruder (Tori) of Athens; grandchildren: John Magruder, Jennifer Magruder, Daniel Farnsworth (Jenna Dolde), Claire Wildman (Craig), Sarah Lollar (Chip), Patrick Farnsworth, Rachel Magruder, Jack and Ben Bandy; five great grandchildren, and her sister Anne Henges of St. Louis, MO.
