GRIFFIS, William Prentiss

Age 75, of Hereford, Arizona passed away on October 9 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Grace Griffis and his son Todd. He is survived by his brother Jack Griffis Jr., of Sugar Hill, children Kevin, Eric, Darren, Adam, Kyle and Katie "Griffy" Harp, his second wife Lee Ann Fryer Griffis, former spouse Patricia Ross Griffis, 4 stepchildren, 11 grandchildren and 12 step-grandchildren. Bill was born September 26, 1946, in Washington, DC. A 30-year educator in Virginia and Georgia, Bill taught locally at Annistown and Swint Elementary Schools and Riverdale Middle School. Bill was a 20-year resident of Snellville, spending much of his free time coaching baseball and ferrying children to sports practices and Scout meetings. Bill also served in the U.S. Army, Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve, serving in Korea and in Operation Desert Storm. In 2003, he became an active duty instructor at Fort Huachuca, in Sierra Vista, Arizona, home of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center, retiring in 2006 as a Sergeant First Class and settling in the community, where he was known to many as "Pappy." An avid outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. Funeral services, with full military honors, were held on Friday, October 15 at the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista, Ariz.
