Two children from metro Atlanta drowned in a lake in Troup County on Sunday, officials said.

The boy and girl, both under the age of 12, were swimming at Earl Cook Beach on West Point Lake, when they went under, Troup County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Stewart Smith said.

Troup County is about 70 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Divers pulled the two bodies out of the lake around 7:30 p.m., Smith said.

The two children, whose names were not released, were from the Atlanta area and were visiting the lake with family.

“Sheriff James Woodruff and the Troup County Sheriff’s Office extents our thoughts and prayers to the families as they mourn the loss of these two children,” Smith said.
