Eight north Fulton County high school students were treated for heat exhaustion during band camp at Reinhardt University in Waleska on Thursday morning, authorities said.

Milton High School’s band practice then stopped for the day after EMS crews suggested the students should not be outside because of the excessive heat.

Rescue crews were called to the campus twice within two hours to transport students to a local hospital, according to Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County emergency services.

“These students had a high body temperature, some were complaining of stomach cramps, some were disoriented,” Cavender said.

EMS went to campus the first time around 9:15 a.m. They took a 15-year-old girl to Northside Cherokee Hospital, Cavender said.

Around 10:30, EMS returned to campus to tend to seven other students. One 15-year-old boy was taken to Northside at that time, Cavender said.

August is the time when high schools begin holding practices for marching bands and fall sports. Cavender said because of the excessive heat, many of the marching band camps currently are being held inside.

He suggested that students make sure to wear light clothing and drink water. If they have heat exhaustion symptoms -- which include weakness, muscle cramps, vomiting and headaches -- they should go into a shaded area or an air-conditioned place, drink water and take a cool shower, if possible.
