A $2 million grant from the state will help Cobb renovate its main library in downtown Marietta.
On Aug. 28, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners authorized acceptance of this 2019 Capital Outlay Grant from the Board of Regents, Georgia Public Library Services for the renovation of the Charles D. Switzer Library, 266 Roswell St.
As required by the state, the Switzer Library project must begin within six months following the grant award; and at least five percent of the total grant must be spent, also within six months.
The local match is $6,367,155 that will be paid by Cobb from its 2011 and 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) programs.
The Cobb Library System’s 10-year facility plan “includes the recommendation and justification to renovate and reconfigure services areas of Switzer Library to meet the current and future needs and demands of library service,” according to Library Director Helen Poyer and Public Services Agency Director William Tanks in an Aug. 28 memo to County Manager Rob Hosack.
The Switzer Library serves as the systemwide resource for the entire Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS).
The CCPLS administrative and support services departments are housed in this 64,000-square-foot, two-floor library.
The 1987 bond referendum provided funds for the construction of this facility which opened in September 1989, and the building underwent minor renovations in 2007.
