A Spalding County Sheriff deputy has been transported to an Atlanta area hospital after being shot in the head, according to WSB-TV.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was responding to an attempted suicide at East Mcintosh Road and Cecil Jackson Road. He is listed in critical condition.
The Barnesville Dispatch has identified the deputy as Joe Buice, former Sheriff of Lamar County.
The person who shot the deputy was killed and a passing motorist was grazed by a bullet and injured, WSB-TV reports.
Calls to Spalding County Sheriff's department have not been returned. Spalding is 40 miles south of Atlanta.
