About 35 homes around Pat Mell Road have been evacuated because of a gas leak Friday, Smyrna police said.
Rescue crews were called to the area of 790 Pat Mell Road around 2 p.m. after a private contractor working on a storm sewer project broke a natural gas line, Officer Michael Smith said. Wade Coots Construction is working on a storm sewer project for the City of Smyrna.
Authorities evacuated about 35 homes that were in a one-quarter mile radius around the area, Smith said. About 14 people were taken to the Smyrna Community Center while others went elsewhere, Smith said.
Area students who were unable to be dropped off at their residence were taken back to their school, Smith said, citing school policy.
Pat Mell Road from Atlanta Road to Harold Avenue is closed to vehicles as well as pedestrians, he said.
Atlanta Gas Light is at the scene to investigate and repair the leak. The repair is expected to take hours, Smith said.
