The man found dead in Piedmont Park on the morning of the AJC Peachtree Road Race has been identified as Terry Durden, 52, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office.
The cause of Durden’s death has not been released, but investigators said there were no signs of foul play.
Police were called to the park around 10:20 a.m. Sunday morning. Durden's body was found on the east side of the park on the hill overlooking the main field.
Police said they think he might have been homeless.
The Midtown park was the wrap-up site for the annual July 4th road race.
Madeline Ware, 14, said she saw Durden sitting in the park drinking a soda about 20 minutes before his body was found.
Ware was walking through the park with her mother. They were both there to greet someone who was running in the Peachtree, she said.
“He looked like he was just laying there drinking a soda,” said Ware, who contacted the AJC after reading about the man’s death. “Then we walked by, and he looked like he was either dead or sleeping.”
