Henry County is seeking new homes for dozens of dogs after an investigation into a man allegedly impersonating a police officer led to the discovery of a horde of canines, Channel 2 Action News reports.

Gerry M. Hobby had told employees of a local pharmacy that he was a police officer, according to a Hampton police report.

When officers went to Hobby’s residence on Steele Drive to arrest him, they spotted the dogs -- many inbred, starving and infested with fleas, and some missing teeth, Channel 2 reported. Police counted 38 canines in the home.

“The floors in the house were deplorable from the urine and feces,” animal control officer Vince Farrah said.

Police said that besides being accused of pretending to be an officer to get a pharmacist to fill a prescription, Hobby now faces animal cruelty charges.

Officials at the Henry County Animal Care and Control Shelter, meanwhile, say they’re now over capacity. They need to adopt out the dogs as quickly as possible, or some will have to be put down.

“Anytime people want to come down and take a look and adopt, we would be thrilled,” said Gerry Yoder, spokesperson for the McDonough shelter.
