Police: Boy, 11, arrested after bringing loaded gun to school

An 11-year-old boy was arrested in Hall County Friday on suspicion he brought a loaded gun and pocketknife to school, police said.

East Hall Middle School was placed on lockdown around 10:20 a.m. after one student told administrators that another had a weapon.

School officials detained a sixth-grade boy and found the loaded handgun and pocketknife in a bag in his locker.

Police later arrested him and no injuries were reported. The lockdown was lifted by 11:30 a.m. and parents were notified.

Investigators said they believe the boy took the gun and knife from a family member without them knowing.

Police said the boy was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon on school property. His name has not been released.

The boy is expected to remain in custody at the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center pending a scheduled hearing Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing.
