Several houses were evacuated Tuesday afternoon in Barrow County after an unexploded mortar shell was found in a yard.
A homeowner on Creekwood Drive near Winder dug up the device around 3:30 p.m., Sheriff Judd Smith told Channel 2 Action News. No injuries have been reported.
The University of Georgia police department bomb squad is investigating the device to determine if it is live, Smith said.
