From 2003 to 2007, roughly 66,000 cases of colorectal cancer were prevented and 32,000 lives were saved compared with 2002, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Half of those prevented cases and deaths were due to people getting screened for the disease -- the No. 2 cancer killer in the country, the CDC report shows. Georgia saw the number of deaths from the cancer fall between 2.5 percent and 3.9 percent during that time. More than 142,000 people learned they had the cancer and 53,000-plus died from it in 2007.
