A researcher from Georgia State University received a grant to study how sweet potato greens can prevent cancer. Biology professor Ritu Aneja will use the $720,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to continue her research into natural, non-toxic ways to prevent cancer. Sweet potato greens are rich in vitamins and minerals and her preliminary research shows it has anti-cancer potential. Her earlier research revealed anti-cancer properties of whole ginger extract. Samaritan Purse’s Operation Christmas Child Project collection week will be Nov. 14-21. The project collects donations of gift-filled empty shoe boxes packed with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement for disadvantaged children in 100 countries. Georgia Detention Watch will hold its fifth annual vigil at 10 a.m. Nov. 18 at Stewart Detention Center in southwest Georgia.

Families that have been directly impacted by detention at the Lumpkin facility, which is operated by a private Nashville-based company, Corrections Corporation of America, will play a major role in this year’s vigil.

The Stewart Detention Center detains approximately 2,000 immigrant men for deportation proceedings and is the largest immigrant detention center in the U.S. ANDRIA SIMMONS
