MARTA adds a fifth station to its weekly fresh produce markets

MARTA has added another station to its lineup of fresh produce markets held once a week from May to November.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony with light refreshments, live music and games will be held Wednesday at Bankhead Station, 1335 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Speakers are to include MARTA board member Freda B. Hardage and Atlanta City Councilman Dustin R. Hillis.

The markets launched with a pilot program at West End station in 2015; Five Points station was added the following year. College Park and H.E. Holmes are also among the list of stations that sell fruit, vegetables and prepared items including salads, breads and baked goods.

Last year, former MARTA general manager and CEO Keith Parker said the markets are an opportunity to help promote healthy meal choices.

“We realize that all communities don’t have adequate access to fresh and affordable produce,” Parker said in a statement. The markets are managed in partnership with the Community Farmers MarketsGA Food Oasis-AtlantaAtlanta Community Food Bank and Organix Matters.
