Lightning sparked a fire that destroyed a Gwinnett County home Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a Lawrenceville home in the 1800 block of Lendl Drive around 4 p.m., Capt. Eric Eberly with the Gwinnett fire department said. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames and smoke through the roof of the ranch-style home, Eberly said.

No one was home at the time, but firefighters were able to rescue a dog from the home, Eberly said. The home is believed to be a total loss, he said.

Glenda West told Channel 2 Action News that she was grateful to firefighter Randy Kapalko, who found her 13-year-old Shih Tzu, Bailey, in the bathroom.

"My dog is OK and I'm OK, and I can replace those things," she said.

The lightning struck the home as pop-up showers hit the Atlanta area, according to the Channel 2 Action News Weather Team.

Scattered showers were expected to continue through the evening before a cold front moves in, bringing a 30 percent chance of more showers Wednesday, chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

Sunshine and drier weather returns Thursday, when high temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s, he said.

Friday, the high could reach 80. Warm, dry conditions are expected to extend into the weekend, with highs in the upper 70s and lows remaining in the mid 50s, Burns said.
