The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services is inviting citizens to celebrate 40 years of saving lives and protecting property at an open house on Sunday.

The event will be held at each community fire station from 2 to 4 p.m., with activities including fire station tours and public fire and safety information.

The Gwinnett County Fire Department was created in 1971 with 10 employees housed in a Norcross facility. Today, it has 850 personnel and 30 strategically located stations.

It has the largest fire protection district in Georgia, covering 437 square miles, and protects a population of 800,000 people.
