A forecast of sunny skies on Saturday and Sunday means the resumption of weekend paving that could lead to big traffic jams on the Downtown Connector.
The state Department of Transportation is warning motorists to expected "heavy delays" on the northbound Connector between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. on Monday.
That's when crews will shut down the three regular travel lanes of I-85 northbound between 10th Street and the Brookwood Interchange. The I-75 and I-HOV lanes will also be closed, leaving only one lane open for motorists headed north on I-85 at the split.
The repaving, which was postponed because of rainy weather the past two weekends, is part of the 14th Street Bridge replacement project.
"Those traveling to special events downtown should take MARTA," the DOT advised. "Motorists passing through Atlanta should avoid I-75/I-85 and use I-285 instead."
Major events downtown include Braves games at Turner Field at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 4:10 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Philips Arena will be busy with the "How Sweet the Sound" church choir competition at 6:30 p.m. Friday, a 7 p.m. Thrashers game on Saturday and a 7 p.m. Metallica concert on Sunday.
