Doris Payne, elderly international jewel thief, is free from jail

Doris Payne, the infamous 86-year-old jewel thief, was released from jail Saturday after an arrest on the usual charges.

She posted $15,000 bond to be released from the DeKalb County jail, according to records. Payne had been in the jail since earlier this week when Dunwoody police charged her with theft at Perimeter Mall.

She was picked up Tuesday afternoon at Von Maur.

“In this incident, Payne concealed a $2,000 necklace in her back pocket and attempted to exit the store,” Dunwoody police spokesman Mark Stevens said.

The 2013 documentary “The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne” depicted the diminutive woman as a career criminal who began when she was in her 20s.

The Atlanta woman was also arrested last October after she allegedly took a pair of $690 Christian Dior earrings from Saks Fifth Avenue at Phipps Plaza.
