Union head blasts court on employee decision

The head of Fulton County's employees' union wants the County Commission to reconsider making new workers hired by Superior and State courts and the Superior Court Clerk's Office unclassified. The board made the change in June at the request of Superior Court Chief Judge Cynthia Wright, State Court Chief Judge Patsy Porter and Clerk Tina Robinson. If unclassified workers get fired, they can't appeal to the personnel board.

Greg Fann, executive director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and a personnel board member, said the change also means workers who get promoted lose their classified status giving them little motivation to seek advancement.

Clayton Schools touts its teaching staff

Clayton County Public School District officials are touting their teachers, all of whom now have a highly qualified designation.

To be designated as highly qualified, a teacher must be fully certified by the state, hold at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university and demonstrate competence in the subject areas they teach.

The district began recruiting highly qualified teachers five years ago to reach the goal.
