A man who repeatedly raped a girl has been sentenced to serve life in prison, plus 20 years, Cobb County officials said Monday.

Felipe Goicochea-Urieta, now 28, moved into the family’s Austell residence in 2014, when the victim was 10 years old, Cobb District Attorney spokeswoman Kim Isaza said.

While living with the family, Goicochea-Urieta raped the child multiple times, Isaza said. Despite trying to find help, no one at home listened to the victim, Isaza said.

“Sadly, the victim’s mother and other relatives never believed the abuse occurred,” Isaza said.

At one point, five adult relatives sat the child down and warned Goicochea-Urieta would spend a long time in jail if she continued.

Prosecutor Matt Carlton said the man took advantage of his position.

“The victim was raped and molested by someone she cared for,” Carlton said. “Someone she was supposed to be able to trust.”

The victim was so distraught she testified in February that she didn’t remember what happened.

But jurors recognized that she’d been manipulated and abused, Isaza said.

They convicted Goicochea-Urieta of all charges, including rape, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy, child molestation and enticing a child for indecent purposes.

He was sentenced Thursday.
