No one was injured in a fire that destroyed an apartment building Saturday evening, according to the Cobb County fire department.
All 10 units in Building 8 at the Vinings at River Parkway complex sustained extensive damage, Lt. Dan Dupree told the AJC. About 35 people were displaced in the blaze, which took 30 firefighters to contain, he said. The complex is located off of Cobb Parkway, south of Cumberland Mall.
“We had to call in two extra units for assistance, mainly because he heat and humidity wears us out pretty quick," Dupree told the AJC Saturday night.
Firefighters found flames through the roof when they arrived at the complex shortly before 7 p.m., Dupree said. The first caller to 911 reported seeing flames in the attic area, he said. The roof of the three-story building collapsed.
Firefighters remained on the scene late Saturday night to battle any remaining hot spots.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Dupree said. The blaze remains under investigation, he said.
The Red Cross is assisting those displaced, Dupree said.
