Tybee Island officer killed in off-duty motorcycle crash

The flags of Tybee Island flew at half-staff Sunday after a local police officer was killed in an off-duty motorcycle crash, the department said.

Tybee Island police Officer Tron Lewis was travelling north on Ogeechee Road when his motorcycle was struck by an SUV turning east from the southbound lanes of Ogeechee Road about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said.

The 32-year-old died as the result of injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the SUV suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Though Lewis had served with the department for less than a year, “He immediately became a part of our family,” the department said in a Facebook post.

“He always had a friendly smile for his fellow officers and motivated all of us to be at our best,” it read. “Rest easy, brother. Our hearts may be broken, but we'll take it from here.”

Lewis’ patrol vehicle was also parked in a “place of honor” in front of the police department.
