In this legal notice, the City of Brookhaven publicizes a public hearing that could precede a vote to impose a moratorium on new developments along Buford Highway.

UPDATE: The moratorium was approved on Tuesday.

Original story: The Brookhaven City Council is considering a six-month moratorium on land use permits along Buford Highway.

The moratorium would halt development while the city completes a re-write of its zoning codes. During that time, no land use permits or land development petitions will be considered in that part of the city.

Buford Highway is the main thoroughfare in south Brookhaven and home to immigrants and first-generation Americans from many countries. The road has seen an influx of new construction in recent years because of its proximity to Atlanta and relatively low costs. Townhouse communities have started to replace low-income apartment complexes.

“As the Brookhaven Zoning Re-write draws to a close, this moratorium ensures that the vision created for this area with public input from dedicated community stakeholders is preserved until it can be enacted into law,” city spokesman Burke Brennan said in an email.

The City Council has noticed a public hearing for Tuesday night to discuss the moratorium. A vote could follow immediately after, and the halt in development would go into effect right away.

The city has hired a consultant for its zoning re-write, and a draft report is due in September. For more information about that process, visit www.brookhavenzoning.com.
