The J. Geils Band founder and guitarist John Warren Geils Jr. has died at age 71, according to reports.

TMZ reported that Geils' body was found in his Groton, Massachusetts, home.

The Groton Police Department confirmed the news, saying officers were called to the home for a well-being check and found him dead.

Geils and his band were known for ‘80s rock hits “Love Stinks,” “Freeze-Frame” and “Centerfold.”

Chief Donald Palma said in an emailed news release that the department is investigating the death.

At approximately 4 p.m., Groton Police responded to a home on Graniteville Road for a well-being check.

Upon arrival to the house, police located a man who was unresponsive. He was declared dead at the scene.

The man is identified as John Warren Geils Jr., age 71, of Groton (better known as J. Geils), who was the homeowner.

The Groton Police Department is investigating the death, as is standard procedure in all unattended deaths, however foul play is not suspected at this time.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Geils died of natural causes.

No further information will be released at this time.
