Bill seeks to increase voter turnout in Georgia’s local elections

A bill proposed by Sen. Houston Gaines, R-Athens, would give cities and counties the option to move local general elections from May to November.

Gaines said House Bill 520 could increase votes in local general elections, since voters would already be heading to the polls to vote in state and national elections.

“In November, you have a higher turnout, so you would see more representative outcomes in these local elections,” Gaines said.

Gaines also said it would reduce the time between the election and when the victor would take office. He said residents in his district, in Athens-Clarke County, have to wait about seven months to see the officials they elected take office.
