Three Cobb County police officers were thrown from their motorcycles after they slid on a patch of ice on Due West Road in Kennesaw, the Georgia State Patrol said Tuesday.
One officer, who was seriously injured, was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and is expected to survive, Cobb spokesman Ross Cavitt said. The two other officers were treated and released.
About 12:30 p.m., six police motorcycles were traveling west on Due West Road when three of them “traveled over an area covered in ice causing them to lose control of their bikes,” the GSP said.
A fourth officer was struck by the other bikes but was able to maintain control, the GSP said.
Cavitt confirmed a water line leak caused the icy patch. The Georgia Department of Transportation is assisting with the ice, he said. It is not clear if the leak was weather-related.
Due West Road was closed during the crash investigation.
No other information was released.
