A Henry County police officer fatally shot a man during an incident Tuesday in Hampton, the GBI said.
The incident happened behind a dentist office on East Main Street, GBI spokesman Bahan Rich said. It began with a domestic disturbance call that came in shortly after 9:30 a.m., when a man confronted his former wife at her place of employment.
The man, identified as Earl Labon Eubanks Jr. by the GBI, was “actively assaulting” his wife when Hampton officers arrived, Henry County police Capt. Joey Smith said.
Eubanks was "combative and noncompliant" with officers, Rich said. He was tasered by a Hampton officer after displaying a handgun during the confrontation and refusing a Henry County officer's order to drop the weapon.
The officer, identified as Justin Boggs by the GBI, then fired one round, striking the man, Smith said. Eubanks was taken to Piedmont Henry Hospital, where he later died, Rich said.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the GBI investigation, Smith said.
It is the ninth police-involved shooting in Georgia since Nov. 1, Channel 2 reported.
