A Fulton County Jail inmate died Tuesday night after he was shocked with a Taser and pepper-sprayed, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles confirmed in a news release.
Antonio May, 32, of Macon, was allegedly combative and failed to comply with jail staff, causing a confrontation, Miles said. Jail staff then used a stun gun on May and pepper-sprayed him.
“May was decontaminated due to the use of pepper spray,” Miles said. “He later became unresponsive.”
Jail and medical staff began conducting CPR and Grady EMS and the Atlanta fire department arrived to assist, but May died at the scene.
The GBI is investigating the death.
May was arrested for criminal trespass and a warrant from another county, Miles said. He had been sent to Grady Memorial Hospital earlier in the day, where he tested positive for drugs, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy.
