Maybe he thought he’d made a clean getaway.

But a Cobb County man has been caught with soapy hands several times in the past month shoplifting gallons of laundry detergent from various stores, according to police. Five arrest warrants have been taken since March 22 against Samer Talal Tabaja, charging him with numerous counts of shoplifting, records showed.

After Tabaja’s arrest on March 24, investigators linked him to additional crimes as soon as the day after he was released from the Cobb County jail. He was re-arrested April 11 and released on bond five days later, according to booking records.

Investigators believe Tabaja, 21, was re-selling the stolen items, police said Tuesday.

The thefts began on March 6, when Tabaja allegedly took 13 containers of liquid Gain and Tide detergents from a Delk Road Publix, according to police. The detergent was worth $263.17, police said.

“Said accused did exit the store with the merchandise, passing all pay counters, and said accused was captured on surveillance video committing such act,” Tabaja’s arrest warrant states.

The following day, Tabaja allegedly pushed a shopping cart containing 12 bottles of Tide, worth $235.08, out of a Publix on Powder Springs Road, near Marietta. Then, on March 7, Tabaja allegedly hit a Shallowford Road Publix, taking 20 containers of Tide and All, worth $415.58, police said.

During those three days, Tabaja allegedly stole $913.83 worth of detergent. And he wasn’t done, according to police.

On March 17, Tabaja filled his shopping cart with 13 bottles of Tide liquid detergent while inside a Publix on South Cobb Drive, according to Smyrna police. The value of that theft was $254.80, the arrest warrant states.

Cobb sheriff’s deputies arrested Tabaja on March 24 and he was booked into the Cobb jail. He was released that night after posting $2,000 bond, records showed.

Around 6:45 p.m. March 25, Tabaja went into the Publix on East Piedmont Road and left with 28 containers of Tide, worth $581.43, according to police.

Then, on April 1, Tabaja stole 21 containers of Tide and Gain, with a value of $293.29, from a Roswell Road Rite Aid, police said.

Police arrested Tabaja on April 11 at his Cumberland Parkway apartment, charging him with additional counts of shoplifting. He was released last Thursday on $5,000 bond.

Investigators are working with other jurisdictions to determine if Tabaja is responsible for additional crimes, Cobb police said Tuesday.
