An unmanned City of Atlanta sanitation truck left the road Wednesday morning and hit two homes in southwest Atlanta, injuring one resident, police confirmed.
A 78-year-old woman who lived in one of the homes is being treated for a head injury at a local hospital, Officer Lisa Bender said.
Police responded to the call at about 10:45 a.m. in the 4300 block of Kimball Road.
A statement from the Department of Public Works said that while the crew was serving a collection point, a braking mechanism in the truck failed.
A witness told Channel 2 Action News that the truck was out of control as workers chased it down the street.
Atlanta Fire Rescue and Atlanta Gas Light were on scene to respond to a gas leak and power outages caused by the crash.
The investigation continues.
