New York police say a 6-week-old baby has died after a stroller plunged down a Brooklyn elevator shaft, according to ABC News.

The New York Police Department says a woman was waiting with the stroller on the 23rd floor of an apartment building at around 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

The doors opened and she stepped forward but the elevator was not there and the stroller fell.

The baby girl, identified as Areej Ali, of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital.

Authorities said the woman was on the 23rd floor of the building at the time. The stroller fell on top of the elevator car on the 17th floor, according to ABC7.

A woman pushed the stroller carrying her 1-month-old baby into an elevator when the doors opened, but the elevator car was not there, according to police.
