AJC remembers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dear Readers,

On April 4, 1968, America and Atlanta lost one of its greatest citizens, The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to an assassin’s bullet. The tragedy and its aftermath were documented by The Atlanta Journal and The Atlanta Constitution.

And now, we find ourselves two weeks away from marking 50 years since that moment in our nation’s history.

Over the coming weeks, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will revisit 1968 and take you deep into that important chapter of our country's story. We will also take an in-depth look at Dr. King's legacy and Atlanta's place in history. On Wednesday, April 4, we'll publish a special 12-page commemorative section with your newspaper. We hope it stirs memories of Dr. King's accomplishments, refreshes the focus on his cause and educates a new generation about his work.

Dr. King is a man worth honoring and the impact of this moment in history is worth remembering.

The March 21 documentary 'The Last Days of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.' on Channel 2 kicked off a countdown of remembrance across the combined platforms of Channel 2 and its partners, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB Radio

The three Atlanta news sources will release comprehensive multi-platform content until April 9, the anniversary of King’s funeral.

On April 4, the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, the three properties will devote extensive live coverage to the memorials in Atlanta, Memphis and around the country.

The project will present a living timeline in real time as it occurred on that day in 1968, right down to the time the fatal shot was fired that ended his life an hour later.

The project will culminate on April 9 with coverage of the special processional in Atlanta marking the path of Dr. King’s funeral, which was watched by the world.
