Royal weddings: England and Atlanta

One of Atlanta's most well-known bachelors officially went off the market last week when Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and his longtime girlfriend, Sarah Marshall, announced they would tie the knot.

Will their upcoming nuptials rival the ceremony planned by leading British bachelor Prince William and his intended, Kate Middleton? Unlikely. But it will be watched with keen interest by Atlanta bachelorettes.

Prince William and Kate Middleton

The groom: Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, 28, also known as "Wills" and "Billy the Fish," second in line for the British throne behind his father, Prince Charles. His grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, is worth a half billion.

The bride: Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" Middleton, 28, daughter of Michael and Carole Middleton. Her parents made millions in mail-order party supplies.

The ring: Prince William's late mother Diana's engagement ring, which features a 9-carat sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

The courtship: The two met at the University of St. Andrews, and they became an item in 2003.

The wedding: April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey.

Matt Ryan and Sarah Marshall

The groom: Matthew Thomas "Matty Ice" Ryan, 25, starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, with a six-year contract worth $72 million.

The bride: Sarah Marshall, 25, a standout athlete in her native Falmouth, Maine, a starter for three seasons on her college basketball team.

The ring: Not as huge as Middleton's, but still a danger if Marshall wears it on the basketball court. Though Ryan didn't say much about the ring, "she'll probably take it off when she plays ball," he said.

The courtship: The two met at Boston College, where Ryan led the school to three bowl victories. They began dating in 2004, and Marshall moved to Atlanta with Ryan in 2008.

The wedding: Will take place sometime in the offseason. "We haven't sent out the invitations yet," said Ryan, who won't reveal the day or place.
