Lavender, laughs and music in and around Atlanta this weekend, June 8-10

From neighborhood festivals, to comedy and the music of Freddie Jackson, Midnight Star and Lakeside, there’s a lot going on June 8-10 in metro Atlanta.

ROSWELL LAVENDER FESTIVAL

Take time June 9 to enjoy all things lavender during the Roswell Lavender Festival on the Grounds of Barrington Hall in Roswell.

This is the eighth year for the festival, which was inspired by Evelyn Simpson, a descendant of Barrington King, one of the founders of the North Fulton County city.

The festival highlight the different varieties of lavender and folk remedies associated with the plant. There will also be shopping, dining, lavender and plant demonstrations, music, children’s activities, crafts and yoga. You can also craft your own fairy house.

VIRGINIA-HIGHLAND SUMMERFEST

The 35th annual Virginia-Highland Summerfest will be held June 9-10 in Atlanta.

The free festival  will include a 5K Road Race, which begins at 8 a.m. June 9 , followed by a Tot Trot for children seven and under. The festival also includes work by more than 200 artists, a local market, children’s activities, food vendors and live music.

Performers include Kung Fu, Alex Guthrie and Gurufish.

GEORGIA ARCHIVES TOUR

History lovers and genealogists will get a chance to tour the Georgia Archives on Saturday as part of its centennial anniversary observance this year. The "Georgia Archives, 100 Years: Where We Are Now" tour is free and will give people the opportunity to go behind the scenes to the reformatting lab and visit the reference room.Want to know how the archives preserves records? Want to see what tools are available to help you trace your family or Georgia history? Visitors are asked to wear comfortable shoes. The tours are held every second Saturday of the month.

HEATHER MCDONALD

Comedian, author  and former 1992 Miss Tarzana contestant Heather McDonald brings her wit to City Winery on June 9.

In addition to stand-up, television guest spots and “un-credited” reality TV cameos, Heather can be heard twice a week on her hit podcast, “Juicy Scoop with Heather McDonald”, breaking down pop culture, her own personal drama and anything ‘juicy’ people are talking about that week. Guests range from Real Housewives to real listeners.

She is also the author of “ My Inappropriate Life: Some Material Not Suitable for Small Children, Nuns, or Mature Adults.”

In 2015 she debuted her Showtime special, I Don’t Mean To Brag, which later aired on Netflix. For seven years Heather wrote, produced and appeared on “Chelsea Lately”.

FLASHBACK FESTIVAL SERIES

The concert is part of a summer of concerts that will include the Whispers and the Isley Brothers.

Parking is free. Guests can bring their own food and drinks. Vendors will also be on site.
