Aldi is a global supermarket chain with more than 10,000 stores. It was founded in 1946 in Germany. Until 2004, Aldi only took cash. It still does not generally accept credit cards outside of the U.S., U.K. and France. In the U.S., Aldi is known for having fewer and higher-paid employees.

Aldi stores get ready for St. Patrick's Day with green and alcohol-infused cheeses

This cheese isn't moldy, just green in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day.

Ahead of the Irish holiday, discount grocer Aldi is releasing two special green cheeses Wednesday as part of its larger limited-edition holiday collection.

The green cheeses – Pesto Gouda and English Sage Derby – cost $3.99 each.

Since St. Patrick's Day is well known for beer and whisky, Aldi is bringing back its Irish Cheese Truckle Assortment, a trio of $3.99 cheeses that also was available last year. The assortment includes an aged Irish cheddar and two alcohol-infused varieties, one made with beer and the other with whisky.

Starting Feb. 27, Aldi will sell a Pesto Gouda cheese for a limited time.

Aldi, one of the world's largest grocery chains, is short for "Albrecht Discount" and named after brothers and original owners Karl and Theo Albrecht. A California offshoot of Aldi operates the trendier Trader Joe's.

Other St. Patrick's Day products available starting Wednesday, while supplies last, include: an Irish Cream cheesecake for $8.99, Irish soda bread for $3.99, a four-pack of O’Shea’s Irish Stout for $5.89 and Connellys Mint Chocolate Country Cream for $8.99. Aldi also sells O'Donnells Irish Cream for $8.99 throughout the year.

Not all Aldi stores will sell the beer and spirits as some states and cities do not allow grocery stores to sell alcohol. Find locations that sell alcohol at  www.aldi.us.

The retailer likes to get festive for the holidays and the special items often sell out fast.

For Valentine's Day, it sold a Happy Farms Valentine’s Day Cheese Assortment with two heart-shaped cheeses and Chocolate Red Wine. Aldi also had a Happy Farms Preferred ‘80s Smash Hits Cheese Assortment in February. 

In November, there was a mad dash on the chain's first-ever U.S. cheese and wine Advent calendars, which quickly sold out at most stores in minutes and resurfaced on eBay at a premium.
