Did the ice bucket challenge for ALS research actually work?

About three years ago, it was nearly impossible to hop online without seeing a video of someone getting dunked with a bucket of ice. The challenge wasn’t just for kicks though; its true purpose was to raise money to ALS. So did it work?

Yes! A whopping $115 million was donated to research for the disease. What’s even more impressive is what scientists discovered as a result. 

After using the money for a handful of projects in 11 countries, doctors were able to identify the gene that causes ALS.

They are hoping their findings lead to possible treatment options in the near future.
