Live Music Picks: July 24-30

FRIDAY

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly

This R&B combo is a perennial favorite in Atlanta. Beverly has been the master of seductive crooning for as long as many young neo-soulsters have been alive. If you haven’t heard stone soul classics such as “Joy & Pain” and “Lady of Magic,” you’re missing some great music.

7:30 p.m. $38-$78. Chastain Park Amphitheater, 4469 Stella Drive N.W. 404-233-2227, www.livenation.com.

SATURDAY

Gov’t Mule

Blues-rock will never get stale as long as Allman Brothers/Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes is around to give it a fresh jolt of energy.

5 p.m. $30. Masquerade Music Park, 695 North Ave. 404-577-8178, www.masq.com.

SUNDAY

Neko Case

While much of her music leans toward alt-country, Case never stays pinned down to one genre for long. Whatever she does, it sounds amazing because of her stunning voice, with just the right blend of honey and vinegar.

8 p.m. $23-$33. Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, 2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway. 770-916-2800, www.cobbenergycentre.com.

MONDAY

Starfest 2009

Star 94’s annual celebration includes G. Love and Special Sauce and Plain White T’s, but the headliner is Jason Mraz. His single “I’m Yours” is already among the three longest-running hits of all time on Billboard’s Hot 100 at 64 weeks on the chart.

7 p.m. $19.94-$45. Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, 2200 Encore Parkway, Alpharetta. 404-733-5010, www.vzwamp.com.

Tool

It’s an undeniable fact that Tool rocks. But there’s much more to this quartet. It takes raw, hard metal and twists it into surprising shapes.

7:30 p.m. $43-$63. Gwinnett Arena, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth. 770-813-7500, www.gwinnettcenter.com.

Tori Amos

Her songwriting excesses may seem pretentious, but such risky behavior can be entertaining. Her musical world is either gloriously off-kilter heaven or a claustrophobic, kooky circle of hell — depending on who you ask.

8 p.m. Chastain Park Amphitheater, 4469 Stella Drive N.W. 404-233-2227, www.chastainseries.com.

THURSDAY

Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson

A high-wattage bill featuring two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and one of the greatest country artists to ever walk the planet.

5:30 p.m. $34.50-$84.50. Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, 2200 Encore Parkway, Alpharetta. 404-733-5010, www.vzwamp.com.
