DETOURS: Dirty South broadens appeal

Music: From homo hip-hop to queer punk, music is a central part of MondoHomo. And Lenny's is where it all takes place starting May 23 with Nicky Click, Cateyez, Diamond Diva and others showcasing their rhyming skills. On May 24, garage and punk acts such as Can Can, the Dead Betties and 8 Inch Betsy bring an equally raucous rock show billed as Chock Full O' Nuts.

Performance: Preceding the May 24 show at Lenny's, the club's parking lot will be transformed into the Mondo Carnivale. This free show features live graffiti, arts and crafts, circus performers, skateboard stunts, a midway and music. A picnic May 25 in Cabbagetown Park offers DJs, a poetry slam and a gay field day with Olympic-style recreational sports. Festivities wrap up with a Memorial Day brunch at Ria's Bluebird with DJs, burlesque and other performances.

Art and film: A free art show at Tilt Coffee Shop kicks everything off May 22, featuring mixed media works by more than 20 artists. And on May 25, Eyedrum hosts the Southeast debut of "Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band," which has been well received at various film festivals. There will also be a comedic ukulele performance by Ben Lerman.
