Delta Air Lines says it is looking at resuming service to Florida airports now that Hurricane Irma is crossing over into Georgia, now as a tropical storm.
The Atlanta-based airline said some airport facilities in Florida sustained damage and it expects reports from airport authorities in Florida on Monday on the condition of runways, taxiways and terminals.
Flight tracking site Flightradar24 showed no planes over Florida early Monday morning, as airlines’ flights remain canceled.
Some flights continued moving in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Monday morning, though Delta has canceled 800 flights as Irma nears Atlanta and Southwest is canceling at least half of its flights in Atlanta scheduled for Monday.
Airlines recommend travelers check their flight status before heading to the airport, and are waiving certain charges for travelers who have flights booked that could be affected by Hurricane Irma.
In Florida, Delta said it was restarting flights into West Palm Beach and Orlando on Monday evening. But some airport facilities in Florida sustained damage.
Delta planned to restart flights Tuesday into Miami; Fort Lauderdale; Savannah; Fort Myers; Tallahassee; Gainesville, Fla.; Sarasota; Panama City; Jacksonville; Daytona Beach; Tampa and Melbourne, in some cases pending an assessment of infrastructure.
Its flights to Key West are not expected to resume until Thursday, depending on infrastructure.
Southwest Airlines planned to resume flights to Pensacola on Monday evening.
Dallas-based Southwest, the second-largest carrier in Atlanta, planned to resume flights Tuesday to Panama City and Tuesday afternoon to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and West Palm Beach. But in some cases, the airline will be operating a reduced schedule.
Flights on Southwest to Tampa and Jacksonville aren’t expected to restart until Wednesday.
