Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport plans to pay as much as $600,000 to replace a leaky roof section just eight years after it was installed, after the roofer went out of business and missteps voided the warranty.

Atlanta Airlines Terminal Corp., a not-for-profit facility management company formed by the airlines, had the roof section installed on Concourse C in 2002.

But the section has been leaking, and the airport is seeking Atlanta City Council approval for the cost of the partial replacement.

The original roof manufacturer is out of business and unable to follow through on the warranty, said Jim Drinkard, the airport's assistant general manager of planning and development. Furthermore, "we and concessionaires have added a number of rooftop (air conditioning) units" and penetrated the roof, which renders the warranty invalid, Drinkard said.

"There is an approved way to do this, that does not violate the warranty," Drinkard said. If the roof manufacturer approves the method and monitors the work, "then they will maintain the warranty," he said.

The airport now plans to reimburse AATC for as much as $600,000 of the cost of replacing about 188,300 square feet of roof between gates C12 and C18. AATC will bid out the new contract.
