Antoine and Larry Carter weren’t house hunting in earnest when they stumbled upon a gorgeous 1908 home in the Historic West End, but they fell in love with the feel of the space and the vintage architecture.

“With the detail in these older homes there’s lots of character. They were a lot more intricate with their designs, and took more time with their craftsmanship,” said Antoine.

A series of home renovations, including an entirely new kitchen, renovated owner’s suite, new deck, outdoor living space and carriage house, has made the house their own without damaging the historic aspects of the home.

“We did a historic renovation to give the house a modern feeling while maintaining the soul of the home,” said Larry.

They also added their own more modern touches in interior design to juxtapose with the home’s structure.

“We try to mix modern with the traditional Craftsman look in different places in the house,” said Antoine.

This mix of styles creates an artistic look that makes the space unique, and a huge part of that style is the pieces of art that Antoine and Larry have collected over the years.

“I am a creative myself,” said Larry, “and I think the arts really are an important part of design and I really wanted to highlight that in this house especially because West End is known for its eclectic style and culture.”

Their home will be featured on the Historic West End Tour of Homes 2021 on June 26.
