Jackets unveil new uniforms at fan day

It's probably safe to say that Georgia Tech's new gold will not be the 'it' color of the fall season.

Georgia Tech unveiled its new uniforms Saturday at the Great Jacket Encounter fan day, and the players were happy about their new white jerseys with their gold accents.

But those gold pants ...

"I don't like these pants we've got on so much," offensive tackle Andrew Gardner said. "I don't know if it's too much of the gold or that there's no stripe — the old gold is kind of a strong color."

Quarterback Bryce Dykes didn't even have a word to describe the color.

"No comment. You don't wanna know," he said with a laugh.

Georgia Tech got rid of its metallic gold jersey/white pants combination from the past several years. For the most part, fans and players approved of the new style.

Quarterback Jaybo Shaw liked thought they looked "up-to-date," and the rest of the Yellow Jackets agreed that the tight fit was a definite upgrade.

The players have already started brainstorming about mixing up the color scheme. Shaw said he's partial to an all-blue look while Gardner said he would prefer all-white.

Myra Haley, the assistant director for Barnes and Noble at Georgia Tech, guessed that she had sold about 50-100 jerseys between 11 a.m.-4 p.m outside of the stadium. Haley said the majority of buyers thought the new look was "sharp." The jerseys cost $55.

"We've got a lot of people who are really interested in them," Haley said. "It's just old-time alum that want to know about this gold. But they question it no matter what color."

Carla James, of Winston, bought a jersey as a belated birthday present for her son, who turned 27 on July 29. James has attended all the Tech games since the 1966 season, when she was a sophomore in high school.

"You can read the numbers better," she said of the new jerseys. "One of the jerseys they had, you couldn't see them real well from the stands, especially at some of the away games."

Three-year-old Madison Martin couldn't wait to put on the jersey her father, Kevin, bought her, even if it was about four sizes too big.

"They didn't have a small youth so she's going to use it as a pajama shirt," said Kevin, a 1989 alumus. "I'm brainwashing her [to be a fan] at an early age."

Kelli Brannon, sister of offensive lineman Drew Brannon, didn't get a sneak peak at the uniforms before Saturday, so she was excited about seeing her brother in his new duds.

"I think they're high class," she said. "I like the old-style idea."

Drew's mother, Susan, couldn't help offering a mom's opinion.

"If you ask me, I think the pants are a little tight. But that's OK," she said.

There were some fans who had even bigger problems with the uniform.

"They're butt ugly," Murrayville resident Jeff Hubbard said. "I want the dark blue jerseys from 1990. I don't like them. It looks too modern."

But at the end of the day, most fans, including Teresa Treadwell, hoped the new look will help Tech's fresh start under a new coach.

"Anything different is good," she said. "I think change is always good. Anything to give a boost.
