ATHENS -- You'll have to forgive Jordan Jenkins, but he's a little stressed out this week.
It's not that whole football thing that has him worried. It's that academic thing.
The sophomore from Hamilton has three exams to get ready for this week. They're in accounting, human geography and legal studies.
He actually broke a desk in his accounting class on Tuesday. And he wasn't even mad at it!
"I tried to get up and the desk got caught on me," the 6-foot-3, 246-pound athlete said. "The part that you write on broke off. I was carrying it around in class with me. They don’t make them big enough for people like me with big legs."
Hashtag: student-athlete issues.
Once Jenkins' gets through with his academic exams, he'll undergo another test this weekend as the No. 6 Bulldogs (3-1, 2-0 SEC) travel to Knoxville to take on Tennessee (3-2, 0-1). While the Vols have one of the poorer offenses in the points-crazed SEC, they do feature what coach Mark Richt called the best offensive line in the SEC "an maybe in the country."
Here's a quick catch-up with Jenkins, who finally registered his first sack of the season in the pivotal fourth quarter of this past Saturday's 44-41 win over LSU . . .
Q: Did I see right that you leapfrogged another fullback at the end of that LSU game?
A: "Yeah. Nice jump. Poor landing. Got some good air. I just have to work on the landing part."
Q: What's your thoughts on Tennessee's O-line?
A: "Woo, it’s going to be real tough. Them boys are huge. I remember last year, the five or six plays I got in, it wasn’t a fun five or six plays. Those boys are big, they can move and their arms are as long as mine. Got to find a way to get through them this year."
Q: You guys actually did a pretty good job against LSU as far as containing the run and forcing them to throw. But they converted a lot of third downs (10 of 15). How frustrating was that?
A: "They definitely won the third-down ratio last week, and it really eats at you. We know we can play better than that, and that’s one of the things we’re really focusing on this week. We’ve looked at the stats and we’ve watched the film and we saw what we can improve on. We just need to get off the field on third down if we want to be a great SEC defense. In the long run, if you get to Atlanta the better defense is going to win that game and you’ve got to get off the field on third down. That point’s been proven."
Q: Was communication an issue on defense last week, as some have been saying?
A: "A little bit. The communication aspect is going to be huge this week playing in Knoxville in their stadium. . . . I feel like we’ll have that problem shored up this week."
Q: You guys had four sacks and five quarterback pressures against LSU last Saturday. Is that an indication that aspect of the game is coming around for you guys?
A. "Yes, but I want us to keep getting more and more so that quarterbacks are consistently fearing getting sacked. If we can get that going we can help out the DBs more and they can have better coverage which will help us get more sacks. I just feel like we need to be more consistent with the rush. I know we can do better. I know we had a couple of chances to make even more plays. We just have to play a little cleaner and more efficiently."
Q: Leonard Floyd is definitely helping to that end. He had another sack last Saturday and it appeared to be a big one coming on their next to last possession. What do you think of his play?
A: "He celebrated a little too much and forgot we had another play to run. Coach Grantham hit us up for that. But it definitely was a nice sack. We ran a nice stunt and Ray (Drew) set a nice pick. He came through clean and it was almost a knockout hit on Mettenberger. I know he was feeling that one on the next play."
Q: What comes to mind when you think of Tennessee?
A: "I know they’ve got a great offensive line. I know their tackles are great. I remember (Antonio) Richardson from recruiting because I saw him on a couple of visits up there. Their offensive line is the heart and soul of that team. . . . And 'Rocky Top.' I hate that song and I know we'll be listening to it all week."
Q: Any chance of a letdown this week?
A. "Oh, no, definitely not. A team with an offensive line like that?! You really have to be on your stuff to counteract a team like that."
