10@10: Georgia's basketball teams score big wins

THE TEN AT 10

1. Georgia’s basketball teams scored some pretty big wins over the weekend. On Saturday, Mark Fox’s men’s team went out to College Station and knocked off Texas A&M 59-52. On Sunday, coach Andy Landers’ Lady Bulldogs dispatched Florida 69-52 in Athens.

2.  The Bulldogs (8-11, 2-4 SEC) rode the hot hand of sophomore guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who scored 22 points to lead his team in scoring for the 17th time in 19 games this season. It was also a rare SEC road victory for Georgia, which went 1-8 in the league away from Stegeman Coliseum last year and hadn’t notched a victory since beating Mississippi State 70-68 on Feb. 11 of 2012.

Now the Bulldogs have a chance to string a few Ws together. Auburn (8-11, 2-4) visits Stegeman Wednesday night at 7 p.m., then Georgia heads back out on the road to face South Carolina (12-7, 2-4).

3. The Lady Bulldogs (17-3, 5-2) chomped down on Florida (13-8, 2-5) defensively, holding the Gators to just 20 points in the first half, the lowest in SEC play this season. UGA had three scorers in double figures, led by Jasmine Hassell with 13 points, Tiaria Griffin with 12 and Krista Donald with a season-best 11. Shacobia Barbee tied her season high with 11 rebounds.

"We were very good defensively, but especially early on in the game,” Georgia coach Andy Landers said. “We also rebounded the ball well, and those two things resulted in possessions. Many of those possessions were transition possessions, so that was good to see. One of the things that we wanted to do today was to get the ball up and down the floor. We did that early, and that helped to create the lead."

The Lady Bulldogs play host to Alabama on Thursday.

4. The short-term outlook for Georgia forward Marcus Thornton is not good. The former Mr. Georgia Basketball out of Westlake High has been sidelined since the New Year with a knee injury. He has already had four knee surgeries in his three seasons in Athens.

“He’s not any closer to playing,” Fox said. “He hasn’t done a basketball drill yet, so I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”

As games continue to pass without Thornton being able to play, the question arises as to whether a medical redshirt year is possible for him.

“I can’t redshirt him,” Fox said. “If the doctor’s deem that he had a season-ending injury then he could apply for a medical redshirt. But he could not even apply for that until the season is complete. So you’ve got to try to get back because there’s no guarantee you’re going to get it. And if you get back and you’re healthy with so many games left, then you won’t get it.

“So it’s a real tough situation and I feel awful for him. Awful.”

5. Step aside, Vanderbilt, the Bulldogs are coming through.

The Commodores have long-dominated the league for scholar-athletes. But Georgia’s football team actually placed more players (38) on the SEC Academic Honor Roll than any other team in the league. Vanderbilt was second with 36 and Alabama was third with 29.

Georgia’s overall academic ranking for the fall sports of football, soccer and volleyball was second in the SEC. In all, 57 UGA student-athletes were named to the fall academic honor roll. South Carolina led the way with 74 and Vandy had 55.

6. According to UGA, 292 of the school’s student-athletes earned grade-point averages of 3.00 or higher during fall semester. Nine of those earned “Presidential Scholar” honors for recording a 4.0 GPA while taking 14 or more hours.  Among the Presidential Scholars were football players Reuben Faloughi and Christian Robinson.

To be fair, not all of the student-athletes factored in are on full athletic grants-in-aid. It is difficult to determine in sports other than football and basketball, however, as they often distribute partial scholarships. But of the other 47 football players that were listed as having earned GPAs of 3.00-3.99, 29 of them were walkons.

7. Former Georgia tailback Ken “Boo” Malcome transferred to Southern Illinois University this past week, the school confirmed. Since the Salukis compete in the Football Championship Subdivison (FCS), Malcome will be immediately eligible to play.

That officially ends the tumultuous UGA career of Malcome, a native of Decatur who starred for Southwest DeKalb. Malcome actually quit the team in October of 2011 only to return 24 hours at the behest of head coach Mark Richt. But after falling behind freshmen Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall on the depth chart, Malcome was unhappy with his playing time for the Bulldogs.

Malcome had 272 yards and 2 touchdowns on 57 carries this past seasons and finishes with 446 yards and 2 TDs in his career.

8. UGA President Michael Adams, who is due to retire in June, was one of eight persons named to the NCAA Committee on Infractions earlier this week. Also included on the new committee is former Georgia Tech and College of Charleston basketball coach Bobby Cremins and former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr.

9. Former Bulldogs Ben Jones and Orson Charles are each back in school at UGA and working toward finishing their degrees.

Jones, a four-year starter at center, is now playing guard for the Houston Texans. He’ll complete his course requirements after 10 hours this semester, then student teach to get his degree in education.

Charles, a tight end who left UGA after his junior season, is a backup with the Cincinnati Bengals, who selected him in the fourth round. Charles is taking 15 hours of classes this semester and has a ways to go to complete his requirements for a housing degree.

10. THIS & THAT:  Col. Merritt Pound, captain of the 1955 Georgia tennis team, passed away recently. He was 78. The native Athenian was a third generation UGA graduate, spent 28 years as a U.S. Air Force officer and returned to UGA as a professor and director of the school’s Air Force ROTC. He played tennis at UGA for four years under coach Dan Magill and continued to play tennis weekly with Magill up until the time of his death. Pound’s family asks that donations be made to Athens First United Methodist Church in Col. Pound’s memory. . . .

Georgia’s baseball team has begun its preparations for the upcoming season. In addition to practicing pitching, hitting and fielding, the Bulldogs had to videotape their introductions for the new state-of-the-art, HD scoreboard that has been installed at Foley Field. Here’s A LINK to some bloopers that occurred during that session with GTV.  . . .  Gymnast Brandie Jay of Fort Collins, Colo., was named SEC Freshman of the Week this past week. . . . Rising sophomore wide receiver Justin Scott-Wesley is competing in the 60-meter dash in indoor track. . . . Georgia’s sixth-ranked men’s tennis team and sixth-ranked women’s tennis team opened the season this weekend at the Dan Magill Complex in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
