Kobe Bryant is not happy about the play above that happened at Philips Arena late Wednesday. Bryant thinks Hawks defender Dahntay Jones walked under him as he faded away on the shot, causing Bryant to suffer what the team called a severe ankle sprain that will keep Bryant out of the lineup “indefinitely.”
But worse than the play was ESPN analyst Bruce Bowen chiming in to chide Jones. Yes, that's the same Bruce Bowen who made an NBA career out of dirty plays—including walking under guys on jump shots.
On his Twitter account, Bowen wrote: “Bad Play for DJ. Walked into KB on the shot.” There were no emoticons, so apparently he's serious.
On SportsCenter, Bowen agreed with Bryant's point that Jones shouldn't have kept moving toward Bryant as he faded away on the shot. At no point did Bowen wink or smile so, again, he must be serious.
Bryant stopped short of saying Jones purposely tried to hurt him but was angry about the play.
"First and foremost, the officials really need to protect shooters,” Bryant told reporters. “You just can't go into shooters. That's a dangerous play."
Bryant said Jones “Jalen Rose'd me,” referring to Game 2 of the 2000 NBA Finals when Bryant landed on Jalen Rose's foot and left the game early. Asked if he would return early to Los Angeles, Bryant said he hadn't put much thought into what he would do.
"I can't get my mind past the fact that I got to wait a year to get revenge," he said, referring to the end of the Lakers' two-game season series with the Hawks.
Jones later defended the play in a series of tweets: “Tape doesn't lie. Ankle was turned on the floor after the leg kick out that knocked him off balance. I would never try to hurt the man. Leg kick that makes contact with a defensive player is an offense foul. Period. The nba changed that rule 2 yrs ago. Stop it! I have the utmost respect for @kobebryant I would never try to intentionally hurt him. Just wanted to contest the fadeaway #thatsall”
Jones has a history with Bryant. He received a flagrant foul after tripping Bryant during the 2009 playoffs, when Jones played for the Nuggets.
“Now what happened in 09' I am not proud of but it was a heated playoff series with a championship on the line,” Jones wrote tonight in a tweet.
Look at Wednesday night's play and you can see Bryant's point. Jones kept moving toward Bryant after he'd released the ball.
Bowen knows all about that move. At least he has the self-awareness to know how it sounds coming from him. During the SportsCenter segment, Bowen said “right now Twitter is blowing up” because Bowen, of all people, is criticizing Jones for a dirty play.
Pot, meet kettle. And stop talking.
