After that whole fake girlfriend thing, NFL executives who are considering selecting Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o in the draft understandably have some questions.
The fiasco raises questions about Te'o's maturity. You have to wonder about his judgment or perhaps his intelligence. After Te'o continued to milk the story even after he figured out his “girlfriend” was not real, teams might even question Te'o's honesty.
But according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, via CBSSports.com, none of that is as problematic for NFL teams as the possibility that Te'o is gay because, you know, that guy who pretended to be a girl said he was in love with Te'o.
"On the field, you still have to account for what happened in the BCS National Championship Game against Alabama," Florio told the Dan Patrick Show. "Here's the elephant in the room for the teams and it shouldn't matter, but we have to step aside from the rest of reality and walk into the unique industry that is the NFL. Teams want to know whether Manti Te'o is gay. They just want to know. They want to know because in an NFL locker room, it's a different world. It shouldn't be that way."
Florio adds that NFL teams consider Te'o's sexuality “the proverbial elephant in the room and I don't think anyone knows how to solve this dilemma yet. It's just that they want to know what they're getting.“
So NFL teams apparently are OK with the Te'o fake girlfriend thing if it only means he's naïve, dumb or dishonest. Just don't be gay and everything is cool.
