Michael Vick settles for $10 million to be bad and injured

The Eagles are bringing back Michael Vick after he agreed to a restructured contract that reports say will pay him as much as $10 million in 2013 rather than the $15.5 million he was owed under the terms of the the previous deal.

At first glance, it looks like the Eagles and new coach/purported offensive genius Chip Kelly made a big mistake. In 2012 Vick had 12 TDs and 10 INTs, rushed for just 332 yards and lost five of 11 fumbles--his 15 giveaways in 10 games were more than the Redskins had as a team all season. He missed six games because of injuries, including more issues with concussions.

But then it all makes sense when you consider Kelly's criteria for the new QB, as he expressed during his intro press conference.

''I'm going to look at everybody,'' Kelly said. ''If you can throw the ball and run, I'm going to take you out there.”

Vick can throw and run ball, at least. And if it doesn't work out, the Eagles have a solid backup plan, according to USA Today:

This does not necessarily spell the end of last year's third-round pick, Nick Foles, in Philly. A person informed of the team's thinking regarding its quarterback situation said the plan this spring, should a new deal with Vick be worked out, was to have Vick and Foles compete for the job. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was communicated to Foles that Vick could be brought back at a lower rate, and that it wouldn't mean he was going to be traded.

So the Eagles have reassured the third-round pick who wasn't very good in six starts that he can compete with the $10 million quarterback who some fans still believe can play. Got it.

The Hater understands that there aren't many good QBs available and so the Eagles are just taking a shot with Vick again. Maybe they can cobble together a competent offensive line and Vick and Kelly can combine for the kind of magic that Vick and Bobby Petrino never got the chance to create in Atlanta.

Or maybe Vick is the same tease of a quarterback he's always been because he's plagued by bad decision-making and poor ball security. Although, in his defense, he's slower, older and more beat up now.

Either-or.
