Actor/director Clint Eastwood, who endorsed Republican Mitt Romney as a part of that famous debate with a chair in Tampa, has signed onto the amicus brief calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to recognize the right of same-sex couples to marry.
"Whether same-sex couples should have access to civil marriage divides thoughtful, concerned citizens. But this Court has long recognized that a belief, no matter how strongly or sincerely held, cannot justify a legal distinction that is unsupported by a factual basis, especially where something as important as civil marriage is concerned."
The people at Politico.com have a copy of a White House email that Washington Post editor/reporter Bob Woodward interpreted as a threat for his criticisim of President Barack Obama, whom he accused of unnecessarily hyping his fiscal impass with Congress. At issue is the meaning of the word "regret" in this passage, written by Gene Sperling, the president's economic adviser:
"I do truly believe you should rethink your comment about saying saying that Potus asking for revenues is moving the goal post. I know you may not believe this, but as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim. The idea that the sequester was to force both sides to go back to try at a big or grand barain with a mix of entitlements and revenues (even if there were serious disagreements on composition) was part of the DNA of the thing from the start. It was an accepted part of the understanding — from the start."
“Under the Constitution, the president is commander-in-chief and employs the force. And so we now have the president going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement, I can’t do what I need to do to protect the country. That’s a kind of madness that I haven’t seen in a long time.”
CBS Atlanta reports that students and parents at Kell High School in Cobb County are taking issue with a social studies teacher’s homework assignment. From the TV station's website:
The assignment asked students to find evidence for a comparison of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin's methods of changing Russia from a capitalist country to a command country to President Barack Obama's methods of changing the United States from a capitalist country to a socialist country.
A school district spokesman said the teacher was a substitute, and that the assignment has been withdrawn. But the thing that makes one really cringe: Recommended sources for this research were the websites for Fox News, CNN and Drudge Report.
U.S. Rep. John Lewis has endorsed businesswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch – better known as Stephen Colbert’s sister -- for Congress in South Carolina’s First District contest. From the press release:
“The Colbert family has always been a strong advocate for all the people of South Carolina. I have visited the First District and know they need a powerful voice in Washington; Elizabeth can be that voice. … She has never been afraid to get in the way. Elizabeth Colbert Busch deserves the help and support of all the people of the Low Country.”
