Freshman state Rep. Mica Gravley, R-Douglasville, has dropped his first bill, a measure that would put audio recordings of some 911 calls beyond the reach of TV, radio and other news media.

H.B. 449 would exempt from the state Open Records Act audio of 911 calls from rape or aggravated battery victims, calls that contain “cries in extremis or speech in distress” of a caller – or anyone else – who dies while on the phone with a 911 operator, and calls made by minors.

Print transcripts of the calls would remain available, Gravley said. The bill has some interesting co-sponsors, including MARTOC Chairman Mike Jacobs, R-Brookhaven, and state Rep. Calvin Smyre, D-Columbus, the former chairman of the House Democratic caucus.
