On Georgia's great blocking and its less-great D

Georgia
This winning touchdown wouldn't have happened had nobody blocked.

By Mark Bradley

This post is an adjunct to the Georgia-LSU game column, which can be found on myajc.com, our premium site.

1. Georgia outmuscled LSU, which isn’t often outmuscled. The Bulldogs rushed for 196 yards – and that was with Todd Gurley missing the second half -- and Aaron Murray wasn’t sacked. LSU rushed for 77 yards, and Zach Mettenberger was sacked four times, the last coming on the first snap of the Tigers’ final possession. Said Mark Richt: “We blocked pretty well. We run-blocked well and pass-protected well. Our defensive line had four sacks and seven tackles for loss. The line of scrimmage was won by Georgia today.”

2. Georgia’s special teams were, for once, rather special. Marshall Morgan made a 55-yard field goal, plus two others of shorter expanse. The coverage teams managed to keep the splendid returner Odell Beckham Jr. in check, and one of the day’s biggest moments came late in the third quarter when, with the game tied at 27, Beckham fumbled a punt. Connor Norman recovered, thus heaping even more glory on Georgia’s No. 11 jersey. That number is also worn by Aaron Murray, who had another splendid day for himself.

3. The Georgia defense did enough to win, and let’s leave it at that. To say the Bulldogs contained Zach Mettenberger, who was once a Bulldog himself, would be incorrect. He completed 23 of 37 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions. His most outrageous completion – and this was a stiff competition – came on third-and-22 from the LSU 13 with 6:40 remaining and the Tigers behind 37-34. That drive would end with LSU taking the lead. The Tigers’ final drive, however, would net only 11 yards and one first down, and linebacker Leonard Floyd’s sack on the drive’s first snap forced LSU to call its last timeout with 1:26 remaining.

From myajc.com: This could be the year Georgia proves unstoppable.

In breaking news: USC fires Lane Kiffin. What took so long?

A better Georgia Tech yields only an emphatic loss

Georgia Tech got the start it wanted and, at least for a little while, ran the option the way Paul Johnson wants it run.
